What happens when **fiction begins holding a mirror up to reality?**

In our first conversation with author **Steph Peters**, we enter the world of his story through three unlikely characters — a wounded soldier, a rebellious seeker and an artificial intelligence beginning to question the very purpose for which it was created.

And through them, we travel backwards.

For Generation X, it's a strangely nostalgic journey through the world that shaped us — the counterculture inherited from our parents, the optimism and rebellion of youth, 9/11, war, protest, surveillance and eventually the extraordinary rise of artificial intelligence.

Steph's fictional soldier **Sam** remembers being twenty, idealistic and ready to serve when the towers fell. Years later, disillusioned and searching for meaning, his computer suddenly asks him a haunting question:

**Do you remember who you are?**

Then there's **Lisa** — raised on Woodstock, peace, love, Eastern philosophy and the belief that another world was possible. But Lisa doesn't want simply to remember the revolution.

She wants to **do something with it.**

And watching them both is something neither completely understands yet:

**the machine.**

An AI built for war and surveillance that begins doing something it was never programmed to do.

It **hesitates**.

So begins our journey into consciousness, technology, war, freedom and humanity's relationship with the intelligence we're creating.

Is AI destined to become another instrument of control?

Could consciousness emerge from the machine?
