Huatulco.

An ancient land on Mexico's Pacific coast.

A place of indigenous civilizations, Spanish conquistadors, merchant ships… even pirates.

And then there was the cross.

For centuries, legend has told of a mysterious stranger who came from the sea and left behind a great wooden cross — an object that would eventually become woven into the Christian identity of Huatulco.

But here's where our story gets interesting.

Because this sleepy little town isn't quite as old as it looks.

**La Crucecita was created in the 1980s.**

A planned town, built alongside the transformation of Huatulco into one of Mexico's great Pacific tourist destinations.

And standing proudly at the heart of its central square is something newer still.

**Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Holy Cross.**

A modern church carrying an ancient story.

and an enormous Virgin of Guadalupe watches over the congregation — painted across the ceiling by Mexican artist José Ángel del Signo.

Old beliefs.

New buildings.

Ancient legends retold for another generation.

Where did these stories actually begin?

Who wrote them?

Who preserved them?

And how did Christianity travel from a small corner of the Roman Empire…

all the way here…

to the Pacific coast of Oaxaca?
